Humanist weddings at Dundas Castle
Scotland is one of only six countries in the world where Humanist marriage ceremonies are legally conducted and recognised throughout the world as being legal in the same way as other weddings. The other countries are Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Norway and certain states of the USA. Wedding ceremonies must be conducted by a Humanist Society of Scotland celebrant who has been authorised by the Registrar General of Scotland and the ceremony can take place anywhere deemed 'safe and dignified’. Humanist wedding ceremonies are becoming increasingly more popular, especially in Scotland. There is no religious element to the ceremony which is what attracts a number of couples. To explain the theory behind a humanist ceremony, The Humanist Society of Scotland says that “Each Humanist wedding ceremony is unique, dignified and deeply personal. Humanists look on marriage as an equal partnership and a serious commitment that involves mutual love, support and respect and a humanist ceremony is a time when couples can declare all that they feel for each other in a way that feels right for them". A humanist ceremony still requires you to complete the marriage forms obtained from the General Register Office of Scotland offices or website. To print the forms please click here.
